Smoking Sandown

14th September 2018

Melbourne weather can be very changeable, but a beautiful morning greeted the Jesus Racing Team as they entered the paddock area at Sandown Raceway.

The team was feeling positive about the weekend ahead with the recent test and the new engine on board. Unfortunately this was short lived as the oil cooler sprung a leak as soon as the mechanics turned over the engine to warm it up.

With no spare cooler and only one practice session in the morning, after consulting the engine builder it was decided to run without the cooler and keeping a close eye on the temperature gauge.

The session started and Fisher shot to the top of the time sheets in position 3 on his first flying lap. There was a hint of smoke and it was entering the cabin so Fishtail bought the car in for a quick check.

The team made a few handling adjustments during the stop but Fishtail was unable to improve on his initial times and as the checkered flag came out, telltale oil smoke came streaming from the rear of the car. Fisher shut down the engine opting to get a tow back than risk the engine and deposit oil on the track.

The team and engine builder were mystified by what had happened to the new engine. The data showed that the oil pressure was very high and it is suspected that somehow the relief valve in the oil pump got blocked. With further inspection of a noise in the motor the decision was made to remove the new engine and fit the older engine to prevent further damage.

This offshoot of this was the team had to miss the qualifying session as they got stuck straight into the work which carried on long into the night.

It will be a long way back for Fishtail to get a good result, but the team is up for the challenge and will be hoping and praying that Abigail can kick the smoking habit!

The action can be seen on Foxtel as well as Channel 10 and to make it worthwhile tuning in Fishtail will have an incar camera on board to catch all the action.
