Regaining momentum
Day 1 The team was hoping to regain some momentum at Round 2 of the Touring Car Masters being held in Newcastle this weekend. Round 1 had seen a tough finish – the team fell from second place in Race 2 to the back of the field (due to a puncture) and then fought their way from the back of the grid to 2nd place in the 3rd and final race. We then had a component fail in the engine resulting in a DNF in the Race.
Fishtail loves the tight and challenging Newcastle street circuit which is based in the middle of the 2nd largest city in NSW.
The cars hit the circuit early on Friday morning and Fishtail got straight to business trading fastest laps with series leader Stephen Johnson. In the end Johnson would set the fastest lap with Andrew being less than a 10th of a second behind.
In what was a busy day for the team Andrew followed this up with second in Qualifying, once again just behind Stephen Johnson.
The third session of the day was the Trophy race which sees 50% of the field reversed and put to the back of the grid. this meant that Andrew started in 10th and he had a cracking race which saw him finish on the podium in 3rd place.
Day 2 An early start on Saturday morning saw Andrew starting 2nd on the grid alongside championship leader Stephen Johnson. It was a cracking race with the two front runners leaving the rest of the field behind as they both broke the lap record.
Ultimately Fishtail finished 2nd to Johnson behind the safety car.
Race 2 saw Andrew start on the front row again. The team made a couple of changes trying to improve the car so as to take the challenge to Johnson. Unfortunately the changes didn’t work and Andrew struggled with significant understeer. He fought hard but ultimately lost 2 positions and finished the race in 4th position.
Day 3 will see the team starting in 4th position. They will reverse the change from Race 2 and hopefully regain the speed they had in Race 1.
